DRAWING

Artist Statement

These drawings reflect bits of my life experiences and aspects of my personality.

In “Naive” I used ink and pen and wrote the word naive in different thicknesses to give the drawing full range of value. This drawing was made to represent how I tend to take many words and phrases very literally which can be seen as naivety, but this is actually a sign of neurodivergence.

“Sisters” was made more to understand the technical skill of proportions in facial structure, but also is made to show the love I have for my sister.

“Underestimated” is the largest and most extensive of these 3. This drawing was made to show how I, similar to many minorities, are underestimated in social, academic, and political settings. It’s very frustrating as we are forced to work twice as hard to reach the same playing field as those who are systematically privileged.

Similarly to “Sisters,” “Concentrated” was made to practice and reinforce the fundamental drawing skills I had been teaching myself, but is also a representation of how concentrated and dedicated am I am with my craft. This is the only drawing out of these drawn from life, as I looked in a mirror and drew what I saw.
