The Home We Built
Artist Statement
As this collection of photographs was taken with the ideas of Diaspora Archive in mind, The Home We Built explored further into its own project. I felt like I could not capture the idea of the bridge between African and African American cultures without recognizing my parents among many immigrants who worked hard to build a life and home in the United States to have more opportunities and better education.
Through this courageous journey, me and other first generation Africans were given opportunities our parents were not given at young ages—opportunities made possible by the generations of African Americans who fought for justice and equality in this country.
In these images, I pictured my parents in cultural Ugandan attire in front of our family home. My goal was to make each photo look timeless and powerful and followed a color palette of greens, yellows, and browns.
